I obtained this book from the library.

Carly Connors has had a hard life. She was in an unsafe environment with her mother and step-dad and then she was placed in a foster home with the Murphy family.

At first, Carley was quiet and angry at everything.  She slowly gets to know the three brothers, Daniel, Adam and Michael Eric. Adam, Michael Eric and Carley became close fairly quickly.  Daniel, the oldest, was upset that Carley had come to live with them. Eventually they become friends.
She went school and made a friend named Toni. Toni at first is kind of mean to Carley, but into the book she becomes a good friend  and the two girls understand each other.

Although Carley acts out a lot, Mrs. Murphy is always nice to her.  Carley doesn't like her at first because Carley's own mother was not very kind. Soon Carley recognizes Mrs. Murphy's kindness as love.

This book has many ups and downs. You will fall in love with Mrs. Murphy and Carley.  Some parts are sad and some are a miracle. It is my all-time favorite book.  I recommend this book to anyone who likes books about family, friendships and love. I think it is good for ages 10 and up. Thank you to Lynda Mullaly Hunt for writing this book. So go out and get it, will be worth it.

  2. What a great post Molly! I loved the line "Some parts are sad and some are a miracle." Carly and Mrs. Murphy are two of my most favorite characters and this book holds a special place in my heart. I'm so glad you choose it of your first post. With your permission I would like to share your post & blog with my 5th grade students as a "mentor" text.

You might also like Waiting for Normal by Leslie Connor, What I Call Life by Jill Wolfson, and A Crooked Kind of Perfect by Linda Urban.

    Happy Reading Molly!

Well done :-) And, I am so very honored that you chose to do a review of One for the Murphys as your first post. I love the way you describe the book and its characters and smiled big to read that it is your all-time favorite~that is the highest compliment ever! :-) The line, "Some parts are sad and some are a miracle." made me smile--great use of language. 5. Great review, Molly! One for the Murphys is one of my favorite books- I made my husband read it after I read it! Reading your review brought back the memories and feelings I had the first time I read the book--remembering how I had to put the book down on several occasions because I was crying so hard!
I look forward to your future posts! Have you read the Romeo and Juliet Code by Phoebe Stone? You might enjoy that one. There is also a sequel that I haven't read yet, called Romeo Blue.

  6. On a rainy day, like today, my first thought is always that I would love to read a good book. Often I go through the shelves at the library and am not sure what I want to read. I always love to hear what other readers have to say about a book before I decide to read it.

So thanks Molly for sharing your thoughts on this book. It sounds like a great read. Also, great job on your blog. I am impressed and inspired. When I get back to work on Monday at Village School, I might just have to see if I can find this book in the library and read it myself.

  7. I love this book and have recommended it to several of my students. Your post was spot on! This book is full of sadness and miracles and that is probably why we all like it so much. Carly is also a great character who you can't help but root for!
Great job on your first blog post! This is super exciting and I can't wait to see what you have to write next!

  9. Hello, Molly. I just read about your blog on The Nerdy Book Club and I loved your review of One of the Murphys so much I am going to get it on my kindle:) As I read all the comments too, I think you will like Susan Dee's recommendation of Waiting for Normal, I couldn't put it down! Also, Sorta Like a Rock Star by Matthew Quick--you will root for Amber Appleton the way you did for Carley. As a librarian, I loved sharing my love of books with students, now your blog can be another way to share your books with the world. I will be following your blog, keep on reading!

  10. I, too, loved /hated one for the Murphy's. I'm a former teacher, mom, and future librarian. I've been on a reading marathon lately. My favorites are:
    Out of my mind
    How to lose a dog
Each kindness (a picture book- I cried)
    Wringer
    Wonder
The miraculous journey of Edward Tulane
The hundred dresses (a quick read)
Choosing to see (appropriate adult book about a family tragedy)

It's all about finding the right books, isn't it?? ;)
